Pencil Grip
Pencil grip is more important before kids start the actual writing. These kinds of prewriting activities give them the confidence to hold the pencil correctly, and they won’t feel the pain in hand.
Draw shapes
Benefits
Prewriting skills, Develops the ability to use both hands,
Age
3+ years
Materials needed
Scale, paper, pencil, any shapes (here I have used magnetic tiles and a round shape toy).

- Ask the child to draw a line with the ruler. Let them firmly hold the ruler using one hand and draw the line with the other.
- In the same way ask them to hold the triangle, circular object, and draw the shapes.
- It is a good activity to use both hands before actual writing and excellent prewriting skills.
Connecting dots
Benefits
Prewriting skills, hand control , Pencil grip
Age
Above 3.5years
Materials needed
Scale, paper, pencil, different colors

- Draw a rectangle and divide it into blocks.
- Mark the coloring dots
- The kid has to connect the dots by passing through the blocks. They usually connect it by drawing the line as they are familiar with that kind of matching. But here it’s a little trick. They are not supposed to draw and match the colors by crossing any line. They need to look at the path and draw the line to match it
- My daughter was used to match by drawing lines, and so she did the same here too.
- It needs little practice to have that control.
- Please don’t force. Draw one model as a reference and explain them. If they are interested, let them do.
- So, we need to mention the dots in such a way as it must not disturb the other matching line. That’s the trick for us.
- Matching shapes can be done, too, instead of colors.
Connecting dots
Benefits
Prewriting skills, hand control , Pencil grip
Age
Above 3.5years
Materials needed
Scale, paper, pencil

- Start with a 2*2 pattern
- Draw different patterns and ask the child to replicate.
- Then move to 3*3 and 4*4 and so on
- These activities are to encourage pencil grip and kid has to enjoy the activity. The idea is not to complete the patterns
- Here she didn’t replicate all the patterns, and that is completely fine-Check Pic 2
- Keep dots at a random place and ask them to connect all.-Pic 3
Tracing

Materials needed
Paper pen

- Keep dots/draw a small rod of 2 different shapes in a row.
- Ask the child to draw zig zag line without touching the dot/rod.
- Draw some shapes in a dotted line and ask the child to trace it over.
